BE AN AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE FOSTER PARENT
INDIAN PEOPLE CARING FOR INDIAN CHILDREN

Preservation of American Indian culture starts with the protection of our most valuable natural resource–our children. We believe it is in the best interest of AI/AN children to be cared for in culturally supportive environments. TESSA, Tribal Economic and Social Solutions Agency, is a newly licensed Indian foster family agency serving American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) foster youth. We are actively searching for Native foster families to participate in our AI/AN foster care program.

Removal of Indian children undermines families and threatens tribal survival and Indian culture. As you may know, there is a lack of American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) foster placements available to address the culturally sensitive and unique needs of AI/AN children, s, many Indian children are placed in non-Indian homes and do not maintain ties to a tribal community or have exposure to their cultural heritage. Native children are overrepresented in the nation’s foster care system. In California in 2005—52 percent of Indian children were adopted by non-Indians. It is unfortunate that we must operate in a reality where Indian children are being removed from their culture. Our agency hopes to minimize negative impacts on Native foster children by placing them in Native foster homes. Only with your help can we assist Indian children.

You are critically needed. We encourage you or someone you know to join us and sign up to be a foster family. If you know any Natives that are interested in fostering or have relatives in the system send them our way. There is a monthly stipend for compensation. THIS IS NOT AN EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY; this is a chance to strengthen our communities by offering Native foster children a stable home and positive family environment. You can make a major difference in the lives of native foster children. You have more to offer then you realize and getting started is easier then you expect.
Eligibility:
•	Enrolled tribal members;

NPO NOW HIRING Grassroots Field Staff here in Sacramento!!!

We’re hiring Grassroots Field Coordinators here in Sacramento on a critical campaign with Environment California to Fight Global Warming.

The Fund for the Public Interest is working across the country with groups like Environment California, Environment America, Sierra Club, Human Rights Campaign and Progressive Future to raise awareness, state by state, about crucial issues in the U.S. - like global warming, health care, energy and human rights. Strikingly, these issues are now rising to the fore, in this election year, in ways they never have before.

If we can make the case that these issues are the most important issues for voters, we will create an opportunity for more action from the federal government than ever before. The margins in Congress are small - if we can convince just a few Senators that their constituents really are concerned about these issues, we can make a difference.

After the election, we're going to need to keep the pressure on to make sure the nation really does make the best choices on the issues we've raised.

Your responsibilities include:
• Taking charge of additional campaign field work including petition and letter-writing drives, coalition-building, news conferences and grassroots lobbying.
• Canvassing 3-4 days/week to train staff, raise money, identify and activate members, educate the public on the issues, and identify volunteers.
• Assisting the directors in recruiting, training and managing a staff of 10-40 canvassers.

We have positions available now for offices in AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NV, OH, OR, PA, RI, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI and Washington, DC.

Salary & Benefits:
You will earn the equivalent of an annual salary of $33,400 and will be eligible to enroll in our group health plan. Other benefits are available with our year-round positions.

Additional Qualifications:
We are looking for smart, motivated, action-oriented people who are interested in politics, have a commitment to working for the public interest, and are willing to work hard to make change. To do this work, you need stamina. You need to be resourceful on a shoestring budget. You need to be able to convey the sense of urgency and passion you feel about these issues. (In-depth training on campaign strategies, issues and skills is provided.)

We work campaign hours, and are looking for a minimum commitment through the November election.

We also have year-round positions that staff can either apply for concurrently with the Coordinator position, or be placed into after the election. And we offer many opportunities for rapid advancement, as we continue to expand into new locations, work with new progressive groups and implement innovative strategies.

How to Apply:
Call 916-455-5000 and ask for Nancy or apply online at http://ffpir.org/apply_online.html and make sure to include the following ad code, "CALO568", in the application. We'll carefully consider your application, and if we think you're a good fit we'll get in touch.

The Fund is an equal opportunity employer.

Youth Development Director (Sacramento)

TUBMAN HOUSE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Program Overview: Opened in January 2003, Tubman House is a community for homeless, parenting youth and their children. Residents are between 18 and 21 years old and can join Tubman House for up to 18 months. Our purpose is two-fold. We meet the immediate needs of homeless youth and children for shelter, meals, consistent adult guidance, and health care. At the same time, we teach life, leadership and interpersonal skills, provide career counseling and college support, and support residents in pursuing growth as parents, students, citizens, and self-sufficient adults. Tubman is known for providing intensive, highly individualized support in tackling debt, legal issues, addiction, mild mental health issues, prenatal needs, parenting support, housing needs, citizenship issues, educational goals, and assembling all the pieces to build a joyful and meaningful life. We will not allow our residents to accept a second class, compromised future. Each resident begins her Tubman stay defining her vision of her life 5 years from now. From there, she defines 18 goals and steps that will bring this vision into reality. These goals address both the practical (housing, income, health care) and the need for healing and wholeness. Goals range from earning college degrees to securing apartments to spending quality time with their children to joining a basketball team to creating art. As staff, we help each resident believe in a meaningful future and help each navigate and celebrate the challenges, fears, setbacks, and milestones of pursuing dreams. Unlike many programs serving pregnant and parenting populations, Tubman House is not religiously affiliated. We support each person's right to choose and determine the path his or her life takes.

Tubman House is the primary program of Waking the Village, a nonprofit founded in 1999 by two teachers eager to kick down classroom walls and share life's possibilities with youth. In 1999, Waking the Village led 17 youth in crisis on a bike trip across America. The youth, aged 11 to 21, overcame homelessness, depression, and addiction to ride 2300 miles from California to Florida, leading community service projects in each state we crossed, and discovering just how giant this country, this life, and their own spirits could be.
