Is it ride "share" or is it not? (Sacramento)

I saw someone’s post in SF the other day arguing about the fact that the actual “rideshare” part of this seems to be disappearing and people are just looking for riders to make money off the ride. These days even $5 to $10 to $15 makes a bit of a difference.

I have watched the postings for some time now and feel that the observation is quite true. I’ll use Sacramento to San Francisco for example. As one who travels to San Francisco quite a bit here are a few facts:

Even with rising gas costs let’s do the math: (I’LL BE GENEROUS)

Sac to downtown SF: 105 miles even. Travel time: 1 hr 30mins
Let’s say your car gets say 15 miles/gallon
105/15 =7 gallons of gas needed one way
Gas: $4 per gallon

7 gallons of gas x $4/ gallon= $28 + $4 (toll) = $32

If you are “sharing” the ride wouldn’t you be offering lets say… hmmm… HALF: $16

Your average rideshare to the Bay is usually asking $20 and maybe TOLL: $24. Let’s get real here: $24 (what they’re asking) -$16 (half the real cost) = $8. Therefore someone asking you to pay more than $16 PLUS the toll is now making money off of “offering” rideshare.

People looking for rideshare already may not 1 have a car or 2 a lot of money in the first darn place (I understand that’s an assumption). So come on people…

Those looking to get to SF, here’s the alternatives:

Amtrak: Sacramento to downtown san Francisco $24.
It’s called capital corridor and it runs frequently: stops in Davis, Fairfield, Martinez, Richmond, Berkeley, and Emeryville. Travel time: 1hr 40 mins on average. You can also just go to Richmond ($20) & hop BART (ALL IN ONE STATION) and go to any other destinations BART goes. (Amtrak also offers a $10 for $8)

Greyhound: Sacramento to downtown San Francisco $20.
No one really likes to take greyhound, but hey, it gets the job done. Travel time: 1 hr 35 mins nonstop or you can get one with stops in Davis, Vallejo, and Oakland.

Happy Trails everyone
