Characterization of the Melanoma Specific Immune Response

We are seeking adult volunteers who have been diagnosed
with Melanoma.

The purpose of this study is to identify melanoma-specific immune cells. Samples from 20 patients with melanoma and 10 controls without melanoma will be compared in hopes of finding an efficient way of raising and characterizing these cells.

You will:

Have Blood Drawn: We will obtain a blood sample from a vein in your arm. A needle will be inserted in the vein and 15 tablespoons of blood will be removed. Approximately 20 tubes of blood will be collected. The reason why we need to take a relatively large amount of blood is because the cells that the Investigator is trying to isolate are very rare. Some participants may be asked to return for a single additional blood draw if investigators were unable to isolate melanoma-specific immune cells after the first blood draw. Two separate blood draws will be the maximum. The interval between these blood draws will be a minimum of 3 months apart. Your total time commitment will be approximately 35 minutes.

There is no compensation for participating in this study.

If interested, please contact our Research Study Coordinators at 916-734-1512.

We are seeking adult volunteers who have been diagnosed with
immune mediated skin diseases such as psoriasis and mycosis fungoides.

The purpose of this study is to identify the cells of the immune system that cause skin disease such as psoriasis and mycosis fungoides.

You will:

Have Blood Drawn: We will obtain a blood sample from a vein in your arm. A needle will be inserted in the vein and 15 tablespoons of blood will be removed. This procedure will be repeated a second time, after you have completed treatment (approximately 3-6 months after the initial blood draw). Your total time commitment will be approximately 35 minutes.

Optional skin biopsy: If you have not had a prior skin biopsy you will be offered one. This is optional and you may refuse the biopsy and still participate in the study. If you wish to have a skin biopsy the investigator will use a sharp small punch, approximately the size of a pencil eraser, to remove a piece of skin from your body.
This international volunteer project is for children lovers, as a lot of patience and attention is needed. Some experience in animation with kids will be appreciated.

The 2004 Tsunami killed about 9000 persons in Thailand and displaced around 7000 people among the population. Loads of kids lost part or all their family in the disaster. The Print-Rite and PitayaSuwan Foundations decided to take 45 of them in charge, to care about them and their scholarship. This project is part of this attempt to drive their life lighter and happier for a while.
The volunteers will organise activities, games and workshops with the Print-rite kids and their fellows in the primary and secondary schools where they study. The main work will essentially be to take care of the children and make them have a good time.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the social and environmental impact of the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand in general and in the Ranong district in particular.

Project period: June 7 - June 29, 2008

Location: Ranong Province, South of Thailand. Ranong city is about 570 km south west from Bangkok and 300 km north of Phuket. The Ranong province is close to extreme southern Burma and the northern shores of the Andaman sea.

It is an interesting and meaningful way to travel with purpose and spend 2-3 weeks in a foreign environment. Working and living together with other young people from around the world provides an excellent opportunity to make many new friends, learn about unknown places and culture, gain new skills and experience. Your time, energy, and enthusiasm can make a difference in areas where help is really needed.

Advocates Needed for Children in Foster Care (Sacramento County)

There are over 4,300 children in foster care in Sacramento County. Many of them need the help of a friend and advocate.

Sacramento Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, Inc. (CASA) recruits and trains community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. As a CASA, you will work one-on-one with a child advocating on their behalf in the juvenile court and assisting them in obtaining all necessary services while they are dependents in the foster care system.

The ultimate goal of a CASA is to help the child find a safe and permanent home, whether it would be a return to their families, adoption or guardianship. A minimum of one year and 15 to 20 hours a month (on average) is required. There is flexibility as to when you spend time with a child as there is no set schedule. Extensive training and program support provided to all advocates. Background check and references required.

Must be at least 21 years old and have a good driving record and reliable transportation. Male volunteers and bilingual volunteers especially encouraged to apply. No prior legal or social work experience required just the desire and ability to work with these kids and the court system is necessary. This is a great opportunity for active retirees, students and working professionals.

Prior to being accepted into training, SCASA holds mandatory orientation sessions. You need to attend only one of these sessions. These sessions will provide general information about the CASA mission as well as a brief introduction of the topics to be covered during the required 30-35 hours of training.

Topics covered during the training course may include but are not limited to Advocacy and the Law, Court Process, Roles of the Attorney and the Social Worker, Cultural Awareness, and Developmental Stages/Behavioral Disorders of youth.

The upcoming orientation dates and times are:

• June 25th, Wed, 6:00 to 7:00PM
• July 23rd, Wed, 6:00 to 7:00PM
• July 29th, Tue, 6:00 to 7:00PM
• August 5th, Tue, 6:00 to 7:00PM
• August 12th, Tue, 6:00 to 7:00PM

All orientations will be held at the SCASA office. Each session should last between 1 to 1 ½ hours. SPACE IS LIMITED, so please contact Sacramento CASA at 916.875.6460 or e-mail info@sacramentocasa.org for an information packet and the orientation date you would like to attend. Please include your full name, address, e-mail, and telephone number.

After School Program Volunteers Needed! (2469 Rio Linda Blvd, Sacramento)

Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) has started an After School Program (Family Homework Help) at their north site, the Saca Community Learning Center. Participants are school-aged children from 1st – 12th grades. The program is designed to help parents and their children work together to complete homework assignments. Parents are invited to participate in the program in some capacity, and the children receive daily tutoring and participate in activities and projects. The children not only receive assistance but also gain from seeing that their parents or guardians are interested in their success in school. The students work closely with volunteer tutors and mentors, and benefit from the consistency of these volunteers as well as interaction with peers involved in the program. We are looking for volunteers interested in making a commitment to tutor and serve as mentors for a small group of regular students. Some participants are not native English speakers and therefore it is helpful (but not necessary) if volunteers have some Spanish skills as well as a willingness to be creative with communication.

This program remains active throughout the summer months, with movies, experiments and other educational activities available Monday-Thursday for school-aged children and their parent(s) or guardian(s).

Responsibilities: We are looking for volunteers who are willing and able to work with and tutor children; assist with intake, activities, research and explanations as needed; take direction from the Program Managers and SFBFS staff members; perform basic homework help.

Skills/Qualifications: We are looking for volunteers who are comfortable with high school English and Math; able to take direction; patient, flexible, and open to differences; empathetic toward clients and their situations; possess good people skills; comfortable working with adults and children with diverse backgrounds. Volunteers must pass a fingerprint clearance (paid for by SFBFS). Must be 18 years of age or older.

Schedule: Family Homework Help runs Monday-Thursday from 3:00PM-5:00PM. Interested volunteers may be able to work additional hours beyond program hours in the event of an internship or other, extensive hour requirements.

Commitment: We are looking for volunteers to commit to working 1-2 days each week for at least 1 hour each day during the program time.

For more information or to begin volunteering, respond by e-mail or call Kari, Volunteer Coordinator, at (916) 648-8733. We look forward to hearing from you!

Volunteer project: Ayurveda is the 5000 years old Indian health care system, widely practiced, in time with the times. "Ayur" in Sanskrit means "life", "Veda" means "science". It is a perfect Science of health and longevity. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the body, mind and spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, tantras, mantras, and meditation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire, and water, and illness is an excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurveda treats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an individual to take responsibility for their own health and well being. Ayurveda is also known as 'Ashtanga Veda' (the word literally means 'Eight branches of knowledge') as it is divided into eight specialized branches.
Yoga is a complete science of life that originated in India many thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world, encompassing the entire body, mind and spirit. It is the union between a person's own consciousness and the universal consciousness. The classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together," and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.

The volunteers will be learning the Basics of Yoga and Ayurveda in these three weeks of the project. Every day, there will be topics covered by the master (the person in charge of yoga and ayurveda classes), which will be practiced by the volunteers. Yoga will be practiced every day. Apart from that, volunteers will also help at the herbal garden and the nearby school.

Andros is the northern island of the Cyclades complex, a little smaller than Naxos. Its surface covers 380 sq.m. The trip to the island from the port of Rafina (around 1 hour and 15 minutes from Athens) lasts about 2 hours. Visitors arrive at the port of Gavrio, which is 36 km away from the capital, Chora.
Chora was built on a peninsula and ends up in a small island, on which there is still a medieval fortress. This small island is separated from the peninsula by a narrow sea strip, 2-3 m wide and its communication to the land is achieved through a stone made culvert. The central avenue of Chora leads to the sea and the large central square of the Back-room Macker, where stands the homonymic statue, done by a famous sculptor, Michael Tombros. Chora is an aesthetically impressive city and combines the beauties of the old city and its narrow stone made alleys, with the new city of imposing stately homes, built during the previous century, while seafaring in the island reached its peak.

The municipality of Andros has an extended network of footpaths, spreading in a wide area, that have been signaled and chart–mapped by the Cyclades prefecture and the Municipality. Local and tourists ramblers often wander in this footpaths’ network for the extra reason that, due to the landscape, it is not possible, in most cases, to create routes for vehicles.

International group of volunteers will work under the guidance of locals in order to clean, conserve, renew the signals and, generally, to highlight some of the most important footpaths of old times, which used to be the main routes of communication among the villages and ports of the island.

Project language: English

They work together to promote a better quality of life for the people who live on the Island. One of the most important projects they have is to improve the local school. A group of international volunteers is invited to participate together with local people in this project.

International volunteers and local people will paint an artistic mural in the local school on the island. They will also help to paint some parts of the school, and will participate in cleaning campaigns on the local beaches with the students of the school.

“Isla Venados” is very small, measuring only 3.5 square kilometers and has only 1100 inhabitants. Just 105 years ago it was like any other tropical island in the area, but today anyone who is in the vicinity cannot avoid traveling to this tropical island paradise. It is known for its beautiful dry forest reserve, beautiful beaches, amazing flora and fauna and now for its new developments.
