Salem Orphanage Home
Salem Orphanage Home was founded in 1992. It is based in Kisumu which is the third largest city in Kenya. Kisumu has a population of approximately 300,000 and is located on Lake Victoria almost on the Ugandan border. In Kisumu, there are many orphans who, without help, would have no future. Salem Orphanage is a home to about 130 orphans who lost their parents (usually to AIDS) and street children from the slums. There are primarily boys, due to the "preference" for girls as household labor help, and the difficulty for boys to stay at home if their mother marries someone other than their father. At Salem they are loved and cared for well, but the need is still so great.

Volunteer work: Volunteers' major duties include:
- Responsible for day-to-day coordination of the Home to ensure efficient performance of the organization operation
- Cooking for the children, washing the children's clothes and counseling
- Teaching the children sports, drama and theatre
- Farming and making "jikos" (cooking pots)
The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday. The number of hours will be decided by the Home management.
Special requirements: The Orphanage requires volunteers with counseling and teaching skills; preferably teachers in Math, English or Science and teachers for early childhood education and nursery schooling. However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered.
Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the Orphanage. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability.
Language: English
Duration of the project: The program will run for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months. The program is running throughout the year.
Orientation: Orientation meeting will take place in Nairobi before proceeding to the project.

Age range: 19 and over

For more details and enrollment, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-kenya.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org,
  617-502-0400

   604-628-7400

Support for disabled children on Bali Island
December 5 - December 19, 2009
March 20 - April 3, 2010

Bali Island is a densely populated island, with population more that 3 million people all together. The population is almost all Indonesian, 95% are of Balinese Hindu descent and could be describe as ethic Balinese. Bali is also a tiny, extremely fertile and dramatically mountainous island. It is only 140 km by 80 km. The tourism boom, which started in 1970s has brought many changes and has helped pay for improvement in roads, telecommunication, education and health. Though tourism has had some marked effects, Bali’s unique culture and custom has proved to be remarkably island. Bali disabled School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Bali and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staffs. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching basic conversation in English, helping teacher in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc . Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.

Our Children's Keeper Foster Family Agency needs healthy, well-balanced adults to serve as mentors to children in the foster care system. Mentors are needed to help foster children adjust to the stressful reality of being removed from
their families. Foster children are living in unfamiliar surroundings, and may be attending new schools. As a mentor, you would be a safe-supportive friend, confidant, buddy, and/or social outlet to a deserving child.

Not everyone can be a foster parent, but anyone can be a support to foster children.
MU’EED, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c) (3) public benefit
corporation. The corporation was
established in May 1993 with a simple mission: …”to be vanguards in the process
of preserving and restoring humanity. Through our programming and services, our
goal is to utilize the stronger members in our communities to mentor and
empower community members who are in crisis. As individuals and families become
stronger, they will be encouraged to assume the mentoring roles. Our vision is
an expanding cycle of support, empowerment, and a collective sense of
humanity.”

In an effort to further the corporation’s mission, in 2002,
the corporation established Our
Children’s Keeper Foster Family Agency to address the needs of children in
out of home care. The primary function
of the foster care agency is to recruit and train potential foster parents, and
then provide support and oversight to the families once they are certified and
foster children are placed in the home.

Have our own car - tent - sleeping bags - microwave - toaster etc... Pretty much self-sufficient except for space to put tent - electricity - and restroom. We can also help out around house - cleaning, yard-work, chores, grocery shopping, etc... We are both early 40's and not always at our best physically and we are studying with a local Christian organization and find it to be quite a joy. Would like to also find a christian household as well - but not in position to turn anything down. Have to be out of current place no later than 11/15/09. THANK YOU if you can find it in your heart and time to help; we would absolutely keep the intrusion into your life down to the barrest minumum - you'll barely know we're there, and we are very quiet people to begin with. We would be more than happy to meet with you so you can see we are indeed good people. James & Debbie - ozaq@netzero.com

Christmas for Kids! (Sacramento/ Roseville)

You see everything on craigslist and I thought why not ask for help on here. I pick a letter from the post office every year from the letters that kids send to Santa. I try and go to the post offices in the not so well off parts of town and I am able to find letters from kids that are only asking for there family to have food on the table and others are asking for a simple thing like for there brother to or sister to get a new toy of some kind. The letters break your heart. I am going to find at least 4 kids this year and hopefully with your help we are going to give these 4 kids a christmas they will never forget. This year I am not going to give them one outfit and a silly little toy I am going to give these kids and there family Playstations , Xbox's, Bikes, clothes, basketball hoops, gift certificates to grocery stores, train tickets and a hotel stay to go to disneyland. Whatever our kids are getting is what I am going to make sure these kids are getting. Some of these kids are going to give up on the human race and they are going to end up in jails and dropping out of school and if giving them a good christmas that they really deserve anyways helps them keep a good outlook on things then thats what I am going to try and do. I am out of work and have been out of work for 3 years and I put a car payment on the back burner every year to make this happen and my family may not have the best or the most material things on Xmas but what we get back from helping these kids is the best gift ever. Even my 16 year old daughter that you would think would only be concerned with the material things loves helping a kid have a great christmas. I am not asking for cash because why would you trust me? I would not just give a stranger cash either just from me writing this ad so the best way for this to work would be for you to donate gifts or gift cards. I will find the kids by December 10th and by the 15th have a list of exact gifts and what they cost. I would love to get 4 new playstation 3 game consoles and 4 games for each one. I would like to get 4 bikes but depending on the kids size we will have to by different kinds and styles of Bikes. I would like to get each family a $500 gift card for a grocery store. And I do like to get the Mom and Dad of the child a gift also. I have tried to contact Disneyland to see about getting week passes doated and stays in the Disneyland hotel and I am also working with Southwest Airlines and Amtrack to see if I can get transportation . This is a long shot but I am trying many different things. So if you are able to help out I would greatly appreciate it but not as much as the child you give a great christmas to will. This is the first time I have asked for help from the public and I am not organized in any way but I have to ask for help I just do not have the means to do it by myself this year and at the scale of what I am wanting to do this year I have to have your help. Thanks for taking the time to hear me out and if you would like to help you can email me at nikegolfca@gmail.com. Thanks alot. Sean
Abused and Neglected Children Need Advocates

Child Advocates of Placer County manages the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. We recruit and train community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA’s are court-appointed by a judge and work one-on-one with a foster child advocating on their behalf in juvenile court. The ultimate goal of a CASA is to find a safe, permanent home for the child, whether it’s a return to their family, adoption or guardianship.

There are about 370 abused and neglected kids each year going through Placer County Juvenile Dependency Court. Help make a lifelong difference for these kids. Became a CASA!

CASA volunteers are required to:
Attend one mandatory orientation session prior to training acceptance.
Pass a background check.
Be at least 21 years of age, have a good driving record and reliable transportation.
Complete 30-35 hours of training before becoming a sworn officer of the court.
Serve a minimum of one year and an average of 20 hours per month.
Complete 12 hours of continuing education over course of a year to maintain Court Appointed Special Advocate status.
This is a great opportunity for active retirees, students and working professionals. Male volunteers and bilingual volunteers are especially encouraged to apply. There’s no prior legal or social work experience required, just the necessary desire and ability to work with these kids and the court system.
Orientation sessions provide a general overview about the CASA program and a brief introduction of the training topics. Topics may include Advocacy and the Law, Court Process, Roles of the Attorney and the Social Worker, Cultural Awareness, and Developmental Stages/Behavioral Disorders of youth.
Orientation (choose one of the following dates):
TBD
Training
Requires 30hours
Training classes are held at the Auburn CASA facility.
SPACE IS LIMITED Contact us at 530-887-1006 for an information packet. Indicate which orientation session you would like to attend, and be sure to include your full name, address, e-mail, and telephone number. For more information, go to: www.casaplacer.org.

January 27 - February 12, 2010

The program for protecting the Marine Turtles is run since 1996 together with the Michoacan University and the local people of Colola Beach. This year again the international volunteers will work with the people of Colola village to protect the sea turtles. There are two kinds of turtles that arrive on the beach, the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information.
In this frame, a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the turtle protection program, promoting international cooperation and solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out at night since the turtles do not get out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles go out of the ocean in the dark). Together with the people from Colola Village, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Local people, who are very friendly, work with the group and explain them what to do.
Very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles are needed for this project.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets of the town or helping to arrange a multi-use playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning work, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The people of the town are very open to participate in other activities that the group of volunteers can propose, so any ideas will be welcome.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

Although it remains among the most traditional areas of the country, it is also the poorest and less developed part in terms of infrastructure or industry; creating a huge rural exodus and migration from the Isan inhabitants to Bangkok. The Khueang Nai District administration wants to dynamize the Deng Mor rural areas and stimulate English learning through the international volunteers' presence. The main target group of the project will be young people and children. Inside this larger framework, each project will address the specific target group in different villages in the Deng Mor area.
Cultural exchange is the main work of the project. The volunteers will discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks. The volunteers will also hold English teaching workshops for the children of several district villages. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Isan region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.
Special requirements: A correct level of English language and the will to teach it to kids is obviously necessary. The volunteers need also to be motivated to discover Thai culture and to present the one of their country of origin.
Leisure time: Leisure time will be organised by the volunteers with the support of the group leader. The closest city is far but accessible. The region isn't very tourist attractive as such but the nature is of extraordinary beauty: rice fields, small temples and natural parks are all over the region.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in a traditional Isan house in the community and have access to the same basic conditions as any villager.
Location: The Deng Mor sub-district area is about 20 km far from Khueang Nai city and 60 km north west of Ubon Ratchatani city, in the Isan region, North east of Thailand.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries go to: www.cadip.orgor give us a call:
  617-502-0400

     604-628-7400

Thus, by collecting eggs from the females and by taking care of them during the whole process of incubation up to the birth of the baby turtles, volunteers and local people contribute to the preservation of these species.
Through different activities throughout the year the "Sirenito Macho" project helps to prevent the turtle eggs being stolen, ensuring the turtles' reproduction in permanence in the zone. It promotes as well a deep cultural exchange between the local people and international volunteers.

SPEAK UP FOR DEFENCE-LESS ANIMALS
Many people do not know they are increasing animal suffering by making their own daily choices.

I need people who feel deeply enough about animals such as these Animals at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O52lcG5sOF4 to spread their message around.

You can play an important role in broadcasting animal -related issues and educating the masses on the internet by creating a myspace and facebook account, or better still create your own blog / website. E.g. http://www.Heart4Animals.com

Are you able to spend some time about 2-3 times a week to find animal -related news to post blog entries ?

I started updating this website with animal-related news because I got to see images of what happens to animals hidden away from our sheltered city lives.

The more people know what animals go through, the more people will refrain from buying products which will further increase animal suffering e.g. fur / fur-lined outercoats.

Do you or if you know of anyone who know Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, or any other language ? These are enormous markets that not exposed to the cruelty involved in the animal trade, and also, the animal organizations have not been able to penetrate into these markets deep enough. (e.g. see http://www.heart4animals.com/?s=korea )Try to enlist people who know such language to start blogs / facebook and myspace accounts to spread the message around.

Please tell your friends / relatives about the horrible cruelty involved at http://www.heart4animals.com/?s=china+fur+signatures to raise their awareness. Thank you.

New horse rescue needs volunteers (el dorado hills)

Most horse rescues are at capacity, and the ever increasing need for horse care and relief resulting from foreclosures, abandonment, neglect, slaughter, the economy, and other-related challenges prompted formation of a non-profit horse rescue organization.

We are a start-up organization, and we are looking for volunteers that might be able to help support the effort. There is a lot to be done as we progress/grow, both administratively and at facility, as well as with daily operations and horse care.

However, our biggest need right now is help with FUNDRAISING! We have the space to house a lot of horses, but not the funds to care for more than we have. Experienced horse handlers are also needed to work with unhandled horses. We also need funds to get insurance in place so we can have volunteers on site. If you have experience with fundraising and would like to help save horses, please email

We have a lot of ideas to implement, but not enough individual time. If you have time, interest, and experience with training horses, grant research and/or writing, fundraising/development, policy writing, graphics, marketing, or any other skill/experience that will help continue our progress in getting this off the ground, please reply. Check out website for additional details.

If you are interested in helping, please email with brief description of how you can help or what you'd like to do/what you're interested in.

We also need a development director (or similar) to help assure longevity and success in our fundraising endeavors. This would initially be a volunteer effort, but could very likely become compensated for the right situation.

Of course, horse/facility related donations are gladly accepted.

Visit our website www.allaboutequine.org...we just redesigned the site, and there are numerous updates pending (horse in rehab, etc)

We need your help staffing these events. As an adoption center volunteer you will talk with people interested in adopting cats and kittens, cover adoption policies and keep the cats and kittens entertained.

Helping to set up and clean out the cages before and after the events would also be helpful.

Foster Home Volunteers: We always need foster homes for the many homeless cats and kittens that are abandoned each year. It is very rewarding and great entertainment playing with the kittens and young adult cats.

Support the earthquake relief and recovery efforts in Indonesia

December 19, 2009 - January 2, 2010

The Kemudo village area was struck by a massive earthquake on May 27, 2006. Seven people were found dead, while hundreds of others were injured. About 85% of houses collapsed, and many others were seriously damaged. Since the day after the quake, international volunteer groups have been involved in relieving the pain of the villagers through the implementation of relief actions, such as sending food supplies and medicine, organizing free medical assistance, and providing assistance to local villages and inhabitants. These efforts are held in the spirit of promoting international solidarity and intercultural encounter. Similarly, a new group of international volunteers will get involved both in renovating/reconstructing the area and supplying education to the local children.
The volunteers will do small renovation jobs and will paint the local school. They will also be involved in educational activities with the children, mainly teaching them English and basic hygiene practices.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the Javanese particularities. Some cultural visits are also foreseen.
Leisure time: Volunteers will visit the nearby World Heritage site of the Prambanan Temples. A visit to Yogyakarta City is also foreseen.
Location: Kemudo Village is located in Klaten regency, 25 km east of Yogyakarta City and 95 km south east of Semarang.

This study is a multicenter, randomized double blind, sham controlled study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of H-coil deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) as a treatment for patients with medication-resistant major depressive disorder. Studies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), typically using a figure-8 coil, have shown that stimulating superficial brain regions can be beneficial in treating major depression. Differing from traditional figure-8 coil, the H-coil is designed to stimulate deep brain regions related to motivation, reward, and pleasure. The study population will consist of patients with major depressive disorder who have failed adequate medication treatment or shown significant intolerance to medications. The study duration is 18 weeks with a 2 week period of weaning the patient off medication, followed by 4 weeks of 5 daily treatments and 12 weeks of biweekly treatments. Mood and mental state will be carefully monitored through standard psychological scales and rating during the drug taper-down and throughout treatment.

BFS is a christian based local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving emergency needs of the homeless. This year our primary goal is to find the most needy individuals, those without any income and supply them with a tent, tarp, boots or whatever emergency supplies they may need. No other services are offered. We DO NOT supply housing or financial aid. This work is accomplished one on one by our caring volunteers during regular outreaches. We need your gently used or new mens boots sizes 9~11 and any clean warm blankets that you no longer need. These will be quickly picked up at your convenience and distributed on the streets by our volunteers. To date we have distributed hundreds of shoes and boots, thousands of blankets and something that is most important of all in these uncertain times, compassion. Check out our website at www.biblesforsacramento.com for more information on our organization. Check out the cool video, listen to the commercial we did for KFIA and get involved in your community by making one person warm and dry this winter.

Goa was the former Portuguese colony in India. It is one of India's most cherished and prominent places for travelers since many years for its remarkable palm-fringed beaches; a travelers paradise.
Groups of international volunteers along with a local group of specialists have been part of an awareness program all throughout the state for several years. This year again a volunteer project will be conducted but with a different theme.
The volunteers will be visiting the schools and rural settlements of the region to present the importance of health and hygiene awareness and the need of education among the adults and the children. The volunteers need to be very creative in designing the exclusive orientation for the people of this region. Volunteers who participate in this project need to bring materials and ideas for the program, after which the whole group will settle on a plan of action decided by the team. The program will be mainly in schools/orphanages where the management will invite the parents and the surrounding villagers to visit and absorb the message given out through the presentations and plays.

Location: Panjim city, in Goa State. Panjim is the capital of the state of Goa. Panjim is accessible by air, domestic and some international airlines fly directly to Panjim Airport. The nearest international airports are Mumbai and Bangalore. Trains and buses operate on a daily basis from Bombay and Bangalore.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm or give us a call: 604-628-7400

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

There are many children that are in need of a special “voice”. These are children that have been abused or neglected and have had no voice of their own to speak out about their pain, and their needs. CASA El Dorado is offering a fall training class for those adults interested in becoming CASA volunteers, those that can be a “powerful voice in court” for children. The classes will begin in September 2009 and will be offered during the day for five weeks. Each person completing the training is then eligible to become a CASA.

CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge and advocate for a child’s best interest in court. Many of these children have been removed from their homes and are placed in foster care. The CASA volunteer is often the only consistent person in their life during a traumatic time, as an advocate, a mentor, and a friend. CASA volunteers are truly making a difference in the lives of children.

The CASA program needs your help. We have more children in need of a CASA than we have volunteers. You may have the special skills and experience that is needed. If you have a heart for children and a few hours of time, you can make a lifetime of difference for a child. Please consider becoming a CASA volunteer. Call the CASA office at 530-621-6760 for more information.
