“Mmmmm… Titanium. Barcroft (Now owned by Bent Up Cycles) is up and running well again.
As evidence here are some pics of a new Virginia Ti build that’s being prepared for a customer.”
“Southern California-based Bent Up Cycles, one of the country’s largest retailers
of recumbent bicycles, is pleased to announce the purchase of Barcroft Cycles,
the Falls Church, VA-based manufacturer of such state-of-the-art recumbent bicycles
as the Barcroft Dakota, the Barcroft Virginia, the Barcroft Oregon and the Barcroft
Columbia, a tandem recumbent.”
“One of the many things I’ve always liked about Barcroft bikes is their utter silence on the road.
Every Barcroft I’ve ridden has been extremely quiet and the Virginia Titanium continues that
tradition. The Virginia has an excellent chainline and the over-under idler that Barcroft specs is a
very muted one.”
“One of the downsides of titanium has always been the cost. $4000-$5000 is pretty much the
norm for a small volume titanium recumbent. Thankfully, Barcroft has been able to bring
the Virginia Titanium in for a very reasonable $3695. The only other titanium recumbent
to approach that price isn’t made anymore.”
“Obviously one of the major design goals when you make the leap to titanium is
to save weight. And I’m happy to report that the Virginia Titanium is definitely
lighter than the original version. Our test bike weighed 23.6 pounds with the pedals
and computer installed. Bill Cook told me that the first production bike actually
weighed 22.8 pounds ready to ride. That’s more than five pounds less than Barcroft
claims for the chromoly Virginia GT and lighter than most other production titanium recumbents.”
