Photos 1–6: Very elegant French Hussards officer and soldier on horseback - 1st empire, 8th Regiment, vintage frame, $75 or best offer
Dashing, debonair and bejeweled with an amazing sideburns (a la Elvis Presley) and mustache to match. Never realized how elaborate these outfits were until doing some research. Hussar as in the French Second Empire style, with characteristic tight dolman jacket and loose-hanging pelisse over-jacket, as well as the famous busby (fur cape). Proudly displays eagle insignia of the 8th Regiment.
Notes on print as follows: across top: HUSSARDS; bottom: 1er Empire, Soldat and Officer, 8e regiment L. Pillet, edit., 33, quai Voltaire, Paris - E. Marie, grav., 56, boil. Voltaire.
Hussar, a type of light cavalry known for their distinctive uniforms and historical role in various European armies. Hussars originated in 15th-century Hungary and Transylvania and later spread across Europe, with regiments adopted by at least twelve European armies from the 18th century onwards.
They were characterized by flamboyant uniforms, including braided dolmans, fur busbies or shakos, sabres, lances, and pistols.
While some, like the Polish winged hussars, were renowned for shock charges, lighter formations were used for reconnaissance, raiding, and skirmishing.
Prussian Hussars:
The image specifically shows a Prussian Hussar, likely from the Napoleonic Wars era or earlier, given the style of uniform and headgear (shakos were introduced in 1804, but some regiments still wore mirletons by 1806).
Artistic Representation:
The illustration appears to be a historical military uniform plate, possibly by an artist like Auguste Raffet, known for such depictions.
