GENERAL INFO
My name is Nick and I live in Auburn. I was the operations manager at a Sunrun office for over 4 years. I have ran over 700 new solar installs, installed over 100 backup batteries, ran over 100 ground mounts, and done over 100 main electrical panel upgrades. I own my own little solar company that generally does consulting for homeowners who want to install a solar system that they will own using the homeowner builder permit. I am a solar specialist who is very good at the local, state and federal incentives.
So, I can sell you everything you need besides a few small parts and assist you in getting a plan set made and helping you through the PGE / county permitting process. You can have anyone you want to install your solar system, but if you don't, I can install it myself or introduce you to some guys who can. I could install an 11 panel solar system by myself in 1-2 days. Then, as long as you get it installed buy the end of 2025, you are eligible for the 30% federal tax rebate, which ends this year so I would take advantage of it.
INCENTIVES
- 30% Federal Tax Incentive for Renewable Energy (Applies to backup batteries too)
- PGE Self Generation Incentive Program (Up to $7,500 rebate if you put batteries and have a well, high fire zone, home medical equipment)
- 2nd PGE Incentive (Up to $7,500 rebate if you get batteries and have multiple PGE safety power outages each year)
- California Property Tax Value Incentive (Until 2026, if you put NEW solar on your home it locks in your home property tax value permanently...THIS IS POTENTIALLY THE HIGHEST VALUE INCENTIVE I HAVE EVER HEARD OF.)
SPREADING SOLAR KNOWLEDGE
My passion is educating homeowners about the solar industry and helping you get the solar system and/or batteries you need where you own it, so YOU get the incentives. The way Sunrun and big solar companies make money is if you get a system on a payment plan, Sunrun owns the system. So THEY get the incentives ($10,000-$20,000 and that pays for the parts and labor then you make $200 payments for the next 20 years. Also, a 25 panel solar system with 2 Tesla or Enphase batteries if purchased from Sunrun is about $45,000 to $55,000. I can put the same exact system on your roof for $25,000 to $30,000, and then help you get $15,000 back from the incentives. Usually, I help with the plans and permitting, then you can put $15k to $20k of materials from the electrical distributor on a credit card, and I can install it in a few days for a few thousand dollars.
HOMEOWNER REPRESENTATION
I also do what I call "homeowner sales representative." Where when a homeowner wants to get solar, instead of going through a sales rep, who generally has no solar install experience but will act like they do, try to sell you whatever panels or batteries that they get the most commission on, and then disappear as soon as the install is done. Most solar companies don't like working with outside sales such as myself, because "outside solar sales reps" have such a bad reputation. What I do, is represent the homeowner to the solar companies. I match customers with a solar company based on your individual needs and finances, then I oversee your project, making sure the system is designed appropriately for your situation, then coming out the day of install to ensure quality. Then, I make sure your batteries are setup properly for maximum cost savings, and then help you navigate the incentive programs. A solar sales rep generally gets 10% of the total sale cost, which ends up being usually somewhere between $1,000 to $5,000. By using me, a homeowner representative, you pay me a fee (usually like $500 for a basic solar install, then I get a referral fee from the solar install company. By doing this, we cut out the solar sales rep, generally saving the customer thousands.
SOLAR CONSULTANT
I'm also a solar consultant, and can assist you with any solar project you might need done. I left my position as the operation manager of a Top 10 in USA solar company, because I was tired of sending crews out to go install and finding out the sales rep had misinformed or lied to the customer, who signed a contract, then we have to break the news, do the install, then deal with the repercussions caused by the sales rep lying to the customers. There was no punishments for these lying sales reps. It is VERY common for solar sales reps to work for one company for 2-3 months, make a bunch of sales by any means necessary, then quitting and going to another company to avoid punishment. This trickles down to the customers, as the big solar companies have their contract6s set up in a way where customers can't do anything about this.
My specialty however is services. Generally, I can solve issues fairly quickly that have been causing homeowners to lose money for months or years. Many times, especially with batteries, the install companies install the system correctly, but due to settings in the inverter or with the Tesla / Enphase batteries, homeowners can have a system that works but causes them to LOSE money after it's installed. For example, the batteries should always be set to "Export Only" mode. However, many times the installers are tired and leave without explaining the settings to the homeowner, and the sales rep usually disappear after the install is completed. But, if a battery is set to "Import Only" or "Import / Export," this can cause your batteries to be charged from PGE when the sun isn't up, and will raise your bill after you get them.
OTHER BATTERY SETTINGS:
The way that batteries save you money is by using the "Self Consumption mode. Yes, they are backup batteries in case your power goes out, but their true value lies within powering your house when the sun goes down. If your batteries are set on "Backup Only," after the installers leave, you may not realize this until 6 months to a year later after you owe $2,000 on your PGE True-up bill.
Every day, you want the batteries to fully charge, then at 4 pm (or when your peak PGE hours start) the batteries start sending power to your house during these peak PGE times. THEN, generally, you will have a lot of battery power still in them, and you want that to get sent to PGE during the night, this is where you will acquire credits for all the power sent to PGE. Also, this is good for the batteries health, as you want the batteries to fill up everyday and discharge everyday. For maximum battery-life efficiency, you want to exercise the batteries between 20% and 80%, just like your electric car or an iPhone.
