These are the early, plywood-back versions of the iconic Chipotle chair—designed in the late 1990s by Steve Sauer, whose vision helped shape the brand’s original industrial-modern aesthetic. Drawing from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian principles, Sauer created a design using molded plywood and welded steel rod framing, built for simplicity, strength, and honest materials. These are part of that first wave, produced before later updates introduced composite materials.
You won’t find many restaurant chains that went this far: custom, architect-designed furniture fabricated specifically for their interiors. These chairs helped define a new era of fast-casual design and have since become collectible pieces of functional design history.
