SBA 7a Underwriter
Primary Objectives: Reviews and analyzes financial documentation to determine the applicants' ability to qualify for Commercial Loans, SBA Express, SBA 7(a) and 504 loans, and approves loans within authorized limits. Assists the business lending sales staff with analysis of loan applications, including spreading and analysis of financial statements and tax returns, and advises them on the strengths and weaknesses of the application. Reviews and maintains approved business loan credit quality standards. Prepares the credit application for in-house SBA packaging and reviews submission of SBA packaging for SBA submission. Assists and trains staff in understanding small business loan approval criteria, credit matters and loan servicing. Supervisory Relationships: Reports directly to the AVP, Business Services. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Principal Responsibilities: Reviews and thoroughly analyzes complex corporate and personal financial statements and tax returns of borrowers and guarantors to determine their qualifications in terms of personal financial strength, credit history, liquidity, cash flow; and debt coverage in accordance with the loan request under current interest rate, terms and conditions; Calculates borrower's repayment ability, researches and analyzes collateral, and qualification and quantification of borrower credit. Prepares and presents results and makes recommendations for approval/denial exceeding individual limits to the Senior Loan Committee. Evaluates all third party reports to substantiate collateral values, title and lien positions. Reviews all related underwriting of business, SBA, and commercial real estate loans by 3rd party underwriters to include loan participations. Reviews and thoroughly analyzes updated financial statements, tax returns, operating statements and other pertinent data received periodically on the existing portfolio. Structures and reviews loan commitment letters, letters of interest, and pre-qualifying letters of interest according to the underwriting criteria approved by said terms and conditions. Reviews loan documentation prepared by Commercial Loan Processor and third party vendors to ensure accuracy. Assists and trains staff in understanding small business loan approval criteria according to the SBA SOP, credit matters and loan servicing. Backs up the Commercial Risk Officer as needed. Stays abreast of Small Business and Commercial Real Estate lending trends and industry standards and ensures compliance with all SBA and regulatory business lending requirements. Required Skills BA/BS in Business Administration or related field or equivalent experience. Master's degree in Business Administration preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial lending, including underwriting experience in business lending, commercial real estate lending, and SBA 7(a) and 504 lending. Required Experience PC skills to include Microsoft Office. Thorough knowledge of business lending, commercial real estate lending and SBA 7(a) and 504 lending from application taking, processing and spreading financials through closing. Professional interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills. Ability to interact with diverse groups of people including staff, business community members and potential borrowers and in a professional and diplomatic manner. Thorough analytical skills to include experience in working with financial spreadsheets such as Bukers. Strong organizational skills and the ability to complete assigned tasks within strict timeframes. Ability to self-direct, use independent judgment, and multi-task with proficiency. Ability to work in an environment of flexible and changing work schedules.
