GOT SHADE?
Stop planting JUNK TREES, like fruitless mulberry, ash, silver maples, camphors, most flowering pears, locust, white birch (the standard european seedling) , liquidamber, eucalyptus, weeping and upright willows, alders, and others that are dirty, short lived, with concrete breaking root systems that create havoc.
I have apx. 100 SHUMARD RED OAKS in 5 gallon containers to sell. This is the best of the Red oak vatieties as is doesn't get wood bores like the common Red or Scarlet oak. This is a large growing tree - plant this where you want a great tree and lots of shade.
Shumard oaks seldomly offered - IT IS THE BEST FAST GROWING LARGE OAK FOR OUR AREA WITHOUT A DOUBT!
Photo of my Shumard is large tree in rear of garden displaying wonderful fall colors!
This tree can grow 4 to 6 feet or more in one season, and again unlike the standard red oak its amazing fall colors of reds and oranges lasts a month or longer. Tree is known to live 400 or more years, and has a deep root system which allows plants to thrive under the canopy.
NOTE : Red oaks are TOXIC to HORSES, SHEEP and especially COWS - so don't plant in livestock proximity.
I have been getting calls from people saying they thought oaks are slow growing.
MYTH EXPLAINED!
Oaks, when grown in nature are known to grow slow in the central valley. This is because only Mother Nature waters them. When you plant a nursery grown tree, it will grow as fast as any other nursery tree. In fact in my garden of over 20 years, the shumards are the largest trees in my garden - growing faster than any other tree!
