The Grading Foreman is responsible for overseeing grading crews and equipment to ensure safe,
efficient, and high-quality site grading and preparation. This position plans, organizes, and supervises
grading activities on construction sites, including coordination with subcontractors, suppliers, and
other trades.
Essential Job Duties:
Safely operate grading equipment, including bulldozers, skid steers, compact track loaders, excavators, motor graders, rollers, and other heavy equipment used in landscape construction.
Perform rough and finish grading according to project plans, specifications, and grade stakes to achieve proper elevations and drainage.
Read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, laser levels, and site plans to ensure accurate grading and excavation.
Shape, level, and prepare subgrades for irrigation, hardscape, planting, and other landscape construction activities.
Excavate, backfill, and compact soil while maintaining proper slopes and drainage requirements.
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment and report maintenance or repair needs promptly.
Work closely with Foremen, Superintendents, survey crews, and other team members to complete projects efficiently and on schedule.
Maintain a safe work environment by following all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and equipment operating procedures.
Perform routine equipment cleaning and minor maintenance to keep machinery in safe operating condition.
Assist with other construction-related duties as assigned to support project completion.
Travel to various job sites throughout the greater Sacramento area as needed.
Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications
• 5+ years of experience in grading and heavy civil construction
• Valid Driver’s License
• OSHA 10 certification (preferred)
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
• Work near or around heavy equipment and moving vehicles
• Work outdoors in changing weather conditions, including high heat and direct sunlight
• Work 8+ hours per day with applicable breaks, 5–6 days per week, with overtime as
needed
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
• Ability to bend, stoop, squat, twist, and stand for extended periods
• Work near open trenches, steep slopes, or other potential hazard.
