We are selling a Steinway and Sons Model M Grand Piano, fully rebuilt and restored in 2012 with serial number: 160886. It is in Excellent Condition. It has a warm, rich, and highly resonate vintage Steinway sound, with surprising volume behind it. The volume compares to a larger Steinway (model L). The original soundboard from old-growth spruce, is in exceptional condition, and was made during the Golden Era. It truly is amazing and something you would never find in a newer piano as all the old growth spruce has been harvested years ago. The soundboard carries the bass register exceedingly well.

From Chuppspianos.com: "Soundboards manufactured during the ‘golden era’ of Steinway & Sons were constructed of the finest quality, old-growth spruce. These old growth trees resulted in lumber with a very tight, even grain. After the wood was selected and cut, it was then cured for up to seven years using special racks that allowed the outdoor air to circulate around the boards. As the wood dried completely, it became extremely stable. Today, Steinway utilizes the kiln drying method. Each soundboard must be custom crafted for the specific piano it is being installed into. Expert ‘Bellymen’ spend a full day on the installation of every board. The use of the finest materials coupled with heightened craftsmanship resulted in the legendary soundboard quality for which Steinway & Sons is known."

The M model is 5' 7" long and weighs 560 lbs. The action is medium-weighted (55 gram/factory standard specification) and is a joy to play. The keys have wonderful touch and allow good control. The hammers and action are voiced really well. We only used this piano about 5-10 hours per month, so you can expect this piano to last many years, as we have always kept it tuned and maintained each and every year. From first year of purchase, we installed a dehumidifier bar to protect the sound board and have always kept our home temperature from 66F to 75F. The Satin Ebony finish is in excellent condition as we have kept blankets or felt over it to prevent finish wear. We have taken care of this piano!

Piano was purchased at Yamaha Peninsula Music Center in San Jose, CA on September 1, 2012. The store received the piano from Classic Pianos in Portland, Oregon, after being restored. You can trust this restoration as it came direct from the store. The piano has been hassle-free, only requiring tuning every now and again amongst the typical work as outlined post-purchase.

In 2012, the piano was completely restored, by Classic Pianos in Portland, Oregon, a reputable Steinway rebuilder including the following work being done:
♫ Case - complete stripping, sanding, sealing, finishing to satin ebony (black) lacquer finish
♫ Original soundboard, in excellent condition. Only refinished with a light clear coat. Never a crack! Never a repair!
♫ New pin block
♫ New strings
♫ New tuning pins
♫ New bridge pins
♫ New Steinway hammers, shanks and whippens. The first five hammers prove it with the Steinway stamp (see video at end of photos above).
♫ Pedals re-leathered and felted
♫ New satin ebony finish to case
♫ Regulation and tuning per Steinway manufacturing specifications

Last tune was April 27, 2024.

Since 2012, local Sacramento technicians have done the following on the piano:
♫ New bronze wheels and finish rubbed out at delivery from minor store use
♫ Piano Life Saver (Dampp-Chaser) soundboard dehumidifier protection system installed
Includes dehumidifier (heating bar out of sight under soundboard on frame) and computer.
Note: Given pristine nature of this old soundboard, it is recommended to keep piano in optimal temperature and
humidity ranges. For dry areas, like deserts, you can add a humidifier (w/ water tank) and plug directly into the
computer. web link: https://www.pianolifesaver.com/english/products/grandsystem
♫ Piano voiced, keys leveled, new felt strips for key back returns for uniformity, and key weight measured at 55 grams, which is a factory standard action weight (considered medium)
♫ We have gotten piano tuned on average every 10-12 months since 2012. Last tune was April 6, 2023.
♫ Similar pianos at a store go for $46,000-60,000 for a complete rebuild with the same decade soundboard (1910-1920). Steinway and Sons predicts it would take $49,000-79,000 today’s prices to completely rebuild a piano with a similar 1912 soundboard S/N 160886 (see https://www.steinway.com/pianos/serial-lookup#/ ). A current comparable rebuilt listing as of December 27, 2023 is $60,250 (see https://faustharrisonpianos.com/product/steinway-piano-mahogany-polish-model-m-1916/ ).
♫ We are firm on price

Includes:

♫ Jansen Duet Adjustable Artist Piano Bench (in Ebony Black)
web link: https://jansenpianobenches.com/collections/jansen-piano-benches
♫ 3 plastic casters for wood floor

The reason we are selling it is that we do not have the time to play it, sadly, and it belongs with someone who has the time and demands a very fine instrument. Otherwise, we will be sad to see it go.

Logistics:
♫ Wire transfer or cash
♫ Piano is located in Fair Oaks, California.
♫ Sale As-is and no returns.
