The AKG D112 mic is essentially an "industry standard" kick drum mic and with good reason...it can take the power and deliver excellent sound. Less than optimal batter heads, poor tuning of batter and/or reso heads can be dialed out on your channel's eq section and this mic will deliver the best response and performance of what remains. On a kick to which the drummer is attentive to the tuning and performance of the heads, this mic is golden. Tight, thunderous kick that will make your 18s smile as well as your audience and the band. It's simply a winner all the way around! Are there better mics? Perhaps. But for cost/performance/durability considerations the AKG D112 has remained the winner for decades now. Description
The pop recording industry often prefers selected models of dynamic microphones for the pickup of closely spaced bass drums and bass guitar amplifiers. The reason is that the moving system of the dynamic can be designed to handle these high excursions with very high mechanical linearity. The AKG Model D112 is a descendent of AKG’s earlier D 12 dynamic microphone, widely known for its ability to handle high level signals from bass drums and bass guitars in the studio. The microphone has been designed with a low resonance frequency and can handle very high transient signals with virtually unmeasurable distortion. High frequency response has been tailored to keep both bass drum and bass guitar clearly distinguishable in the mix. A built-in windscreen makes the D 112 also suitable for high SPL instruments (trombone and tuba).
