Yep, this is kind of a weird one: this is a fully functional, recently serviced, Tascam 238 rack mount 8-track. If you're not familiar, it records 8 tracks on standard cassette tapes run at double speed. The quality's actually quite good! Here's a really helpful old article: https://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/tascam-238-syncaset/3952
I had one of these back in the nineties, and bought this one last September to pull tracks off of a bunch of my old tapes that turned up in an old box of stuff. It was recently factory-serviced and even came with a one-year warranty as a result.
I've now converted all my tracks to digital and hope to pass this along to someone else who either needs to do something similar, or is big into old-tech recording.
It will come with a second machine which I'm characterizing as a backup unit for parts—shown in my second photo. The second unit was sold to me on Reverb as "fully functional and tested" but when I received it, the capstan motor was floating loose inside. It powers up and may be even be repairable but Reverb refunded my money and told me to keep it. It's been on a shelf since.
The unit is still in the rack with a Scarlett 18i20 so I can demonstrate functionality if needed. The rack, Focusrite, power conditioner, and all the other crap around the parts unit are *not* included. ;) However, if you'd like the Focusrite as well we can talk about it.
Happy to answer any questions. The usual applies: first come, first served, you pick up in West Sac, include your phone number so I know you're serious. Thank you.
