The Catalinbread Formula No. 55 is a premium, USA-made foundation overdrive pedal engineered to meticulously replicate the preamp section and interactive behavior of a vintage Fender Tweed 5E3 Deluxe amplifier. Utilizing an all-discrete, JFET-based analog signal path, it delivers the highly responsive, touch-sensitive sag and harmonic richness of a low-wattage tube amp pushing air. It acts as a true "amp-in-a-box," capable of transforming a clean channel into a wide-ranging, snarling tweed monster.
Core Controls & Circuit Behavior - Unlike traditional overdrive pedals that sit on top of your tone, the Formula 55 mimics the actual architecture of the 5E3 circuit.
-Volume (Gain): Functions exactly like the volume control on the original amp. It sweeps from warm, woody jazz cleans to thick, horn-like barking overdrive.
-Tone: Replicates the part-for-part interaction of the 5E3. Set at noon for a flat response, turned down for smoky and creamy textures, or cranked up to boost the upper-mids to slice through a live mix.
-Presence: A specialized control extending beyond the vintage amp's capabilities. It cuts or boosts the 5kHz frequency range, allowing you to seamlessly tune the pedal’s top-end bite to match different guitar pickups and amplifiers.
-Master: Controls the overall output volume. It provides a massive amount of clean headroom and a low -output impedance to push your physical amplifier perfectly.
Hi/Lo Gain Switch: Emulates a tube swap in the preamp section. The Lo mode (Green) yields clean-to-mildly driven 12AY7 tube characteristics, perfect for classic blues or Neil Young’s cleaner textures. The Hi mode (Red) floods the circuit with a high-gain 12AX7 emulation for heavy saturation, Dynamic low-end push, and raw attitude.
