A supervised visitation coach (or visit coach) is a trained by the supervisor to support parents in rebuilding bonds with their children during court-ordered visits. A coach actively helps parents improve parenting skills, manage emotions, and focus on the child's needs during visits.
Key Responsibilities of a Visit Coach:
Preparation: Prepares parents before the visit for their child’s reactions and helps them plan to give full attention to the child.
Active Coaching: Coaches the parent during the visit to improve skills, such as how to interact positively, handle emotions, and respond to the child's needs.
A visitation coach takes notes during visits. These notes are critical for documenting interactions between the parent and child, tracking progress on safety goals, and ensuring the child's well-being. Coaches note observed behaviors, body language, tone of voice, and any notable exchanges. They also record how the parent met the needs of the child, strengths that were encouraged, and specific parenting skills learned.
Strengths-Based Approach: Focuses on the parent's strengths rather than just observing and documenting mistakes.
Reunification Focus: Promotes a positive, fun experience for the child to help move the family toward unsupervised visits.
Goal Setting: Collaborates with the parent to set specific goals for visits based on the child's emotional needs
