We have a furnished guest room available to rent on the second floor of a detached garage, surrounded on three sides by mature olive trees. With vaulted ceilings, the room has a private north-facing balcony and a long south-facing balcony (shared with another guest room), with an outside staircase to a shared bathroom on the ground floor. Currently, there are no kitchen facilities other than a microwave oven, a hot plate, a fridge, a freezer, a coffee maker, and cooking outside in mild weather. The previous occupant was with us for five years. He recently retired and purchased a home out of the area. The other rental room is currently occupied by a quiet gentleman who works locally and has been with us for over 4 years.
The new renter would enjoy the option to plant and tend their own garden space/boxes in a sunny, open area with good water, soil, and nearly unlimited compost from a friend's goat farm. We also have over sixty assorted fruit trees and a supply of great-tasting chicken eggs from our neighbors' flock, who roam our olive grove. Five acres of century-old olive trees surround our home and guest rooms. Harvested the old school way by our friends, mostly rock climbers, our sizeable trees produce extra virgin olive oil good enough to win the California Olive Oil Council’s statewide Gold Medal in 2018 for the Mission olive variety. We are micro producers of the ‘Moonrise Grove’ brand organic olive oil, which we sell at a few regional farmers’ markets.
Additionally, the new renter will be welcome to establish and tend their own garden. No pets allowed, but we have abundant wildlife to observe. Our western property line is bounded by the Winters Canal, which offers scenic hiking/biking along the bank. Bike riding abounds on country roads in every direction. A photogenic five-mile loop meanders through the foothills beginning a few hundred feet west of our home.
Finally, the person renting the room would have to understand that our long-term goal is to convert both guest quarters into Airbnb rentals. Realistically, this goal is at least two years away. As I recently turned 70 and wish to slowly transition from a do-it-all role to a more managerial one, the ideal candidate for renting our room may be interested in helping develop the potential of our property, including Airbnb and/or Agri-tourism aspects. We would be open to discussing a win-win arrangement where skilled work to improve our property could be exchanged for a commensurate rent reduction.
